US-based medical network Capital Health has deployed GE Healthcare’s Discovery NM 750b, a specialised breast scanner that enables advanced functional imaging of breast cancer, at its New Jersey Hopewell medical centre.

The GE Discovery NM 750b scanner features dual Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) detectors.

The system’s detector design is expected to allow increased imaging sensitivity compared to conventional Nuclear Medicine Gamma cameras.

The Discovery NM750b requires only light immobilisation and with no need for full compression.

According to GE Healthcare, Discovery NM 750b is intended to become part of a comprehensive array of advanced imaging technologies including positron emission tomography, spiral CT and magnetic resonance imaging.

Capital Health president and CEO Al Maghazehe said: “We are very pleased to offer women in our community this new, highly sophisticated test that can help detect breast cancer at its earliest stages.”

“We remain committed to bringing patients in this region the latest technological advances to enhance their healthcare options,” Maghazehe added.

Capital Health radiology department medical director Yaakov Applbaum said: “This innovative technology overcomes some of the challenges we currently face with breast cancer detection, particularly in women with dense breast tissue.”
