  • Damaged or hardened arteries which limits the amount of blood travelling to your organs
  • Your heart having to work harder in order to pump blood through damaged arteries

While your body needs cholesterol to continue building healthy cells, a high cholesterol level can increase your risk of heart disease. Just like blood pressure, we don’t normally take notice of the building risk until it’s too late. It can be inherited but mainly it is simply poor lifestyle choices that lead to high cholesterol.

High cholesterol leads to:

  • Decreased blood supply to the brain


High cholesterol has no symptoms. You can only detect it through a blood test.

  • Get more exercise

  1. Hepatitis A

Hepatitis can be described as an inflammation of the liver and can lead to fibrosis or liver cancer. There are 5 main hepatitis viruses namely A, B, C, D and E. Hepatitis A and E are typically caused through the ingestion of contaminated food or water. Symptoms of hepatitis A do not occur until you’ve had the virus for several weeks.

Hepatitis A leads to:

  • Liver cancer or failure
  • A vaccination that may cause long term side effects
  • High liver damage that may impact the brain
  • Damage to the salivary glands causing dry mouth and eyes
  • High blood sugar


  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort especially on the right side beneath your lower ribs
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes

  • Avoid unclean food and water
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after using the restroom
  • Avoid contaminated water and any food that came into contact with it
  • Use carbonated bottled water to brush your teeth and drink
  • Boil water to ensure that it is contamination free

  1. Skin Cancer/Malignant Melanoma

Many of us don’t realise the devastating effects of the sun until it’s too late. Melanoma is responsible for almost all of the deaths from skin cancer. Melanocytes are the cells which produce melanin and give skin its colour. UV light from the sun or tanning beds are the main causes of melanoma. Even though you got a bad sunburn as a child, it can still haunt you and turn into cancer as an adult.

  • Never leave the house in summer without quality sunscreen. Sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher should work
  • Stay in the shade whenever possible
  • Wear a hat when in the sun
  • Don’t use UV tanning beds
  • Wear UV-blocking sunglasses
